The story behind Homer’s Ithaca

Homer’s Ithaca is an independent research and public-history project exploring whether the landscape, archaeology, and living memory of Kefalonia can shed new light on the world described in the Odyssey.

Why we began

The project began with a simple but persistent question: could the geography described by Homer still be recognised in the landscape of Kefalonia? Archaeological discoveries around Tzannata gave that question new significance, alongside the continued study of the island’s terrain, place names, traditions, and ancient remains.

Homer’s Ithaca was created to bring this material together in one accessible place, documenting the discoveries, exploring the ideas they have inspired, and distinguishing established evidence from interpretation. The purpose is not to force the landscape to fit the story, but to follow the evidence wherever it leads.
